British Youth Opera is the UK’s leading training opera company: an arts charity dedicated to developing the next generation of opera professionals. More than 5,000 young people have benefitted from British Youth Opera’s training. A large number of these have gone on to successful careers in opera, including as principal artists and creatives in the world’s great opera houses.
Around half of BYO’s trainees have been singers, and the other half a host of talented music, creative and production staff: assistant conductors and repetiteurs; assistant directors, assistant designers, assistant lighting designers and costume assistants; and assistant production and stage managers.
Our selection process is competitive, but every participant benefits from a fully-funded placement and other assistance as required. Our policy of ‘no fees’ is core to our mission: we exist to provide training and support to those demonstrating talent and potential, not only to those who can afford to pay.
British Youth Opera fulfils a distinct and focused talent development role in the opera and music theatre sector, providing highly regarded training as a bridge to professional careers for a wide range of performing, backstage and producing roles.
Arts Council England, 2018
BYO is proud to be an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation, recognised as playing a fundamental role in supporting and developing professionals for the opera and music theatre sector. However, as an arts charity, over 90% of our income comes from voluntary sources such as donations, legacies and grants, which means we need to generate over £500,000 annually through fundraising.
