BYO offers training to the most talented singers and stage technicians in the country.

It is imperative that BYO is able to do this free of charge to the participants. These places must be offered to the individuals who most merit them on their talents and who will benefit most from them – not simply to those who can afford to take part.

On average a training position with British Youth Opera costs the company £5,000.

In round terms the company costs £400,000 a year to operate.

BYO is currently in receipt of a grant from Arts Council England in the region of £40,000 per year – 10% of the company’s needs.

BYO needs to generate a further £360,000 each year in order to maintain its current level of training opportunities.

BYO receives support from Charitable Trusts and Foundations, companies, through fundraising events and – most importantly – from individual donors.

There are a number of ways in which you can be involved. At BYO we are very keen that we should offer our supporters every opportunity to engage with the company. Therefore we tailor packages to meet the needs of supporters, which may range from a desire to connect with young performers on the cusp of their careers through to opportunities to entertain guests around a performance.

By becoming a Friend you can help ensure that BYO continues giving vital development opportunities and experience to young singers, allowing them to take their first steps on the path towards careers that will bring pleasure to opera-goers for many years to come.

You can support BYO with your time and skills! If you have some spare time on your hands and would like to help out in the office do please call Csenge our General Manager - who is covering this year for Naomi Simon - on 020 7815 6093. She will be pleased to have an informal chat and explore ways you might be able to help and be involved.

One enormously practical way in which many people support British Youth Opera is by providing accommodation for a trainee or singer. Often the young participants who come to train with us do not have a London base. A spare room in your home could make all the difference. We also know from experience that hosts get a great deal out of such arrangements, and many friendships have been developed that last long into the participants’ careers. If you think you might be able to help in 2017, please call Csenge (020 7815 6093).
