BYO’s Summer Season productions offer five positions for pianists who want to develop their skills as repetiteurs. Applicants should be at the start of their career, have a fluent keyboard technique and have some experience of working with singers and playing for opera rehearsals.
Each of our two Summer Season productions require two dedicated repetiteurs, with an additional repetiteur working on both operas. Repetiteurs work with professional conductors during rehearsals, and with assistant conductors during cover rehearsals.
Repetiteur’s responsibilities include:
- playing for music rehearsals, production rehearsals and stage/piano rehearsals.
- coaching singers in conjunction with professional vocal coaches and language coaches.
- playing continuo/keyboards during performances (depending on the opera’s requirements).
For Summer Season productions 2012
Rehearsals in London from 23 July (not all repetiteurs will be required for the first two weeks).
Performances at the Peacock Theatre, London until 15 September
Repertoire to include:
- Smetana
- The Bartered Bride (in English)
- Weir
- A Night at the Chinese Opera
To apply, please download the application form and return it with your CV and covering letter to marcella@byo.org.uk.
The deadline for receipt of applications is Monday 26 March.
Auditions will be held at London South Bank University on 3 and 5 April.
Applicants should prepare two contrasting operatic excerpts of approximately ten minutes each. One of these should be EITHER by a 19th-century composer (i.e. born after 1800) OR by a 20th-/21st-century British composer. The other can be anything of the candidate's choice. Both excerpts should include at least two characters, i.e. not an aria. Candidates should be prepared to sing in vocal cues as necessary, as they play.
Candidates will also be given a sight-reading test.
British Youth Opera is the UK's premier company for training new and emerging operatic talent. It offers valuable opportunities for young singers to receive professional training in all aspects of opera through workshops and masterclasses, and to take part in rehearsals and performances in its annual Summer Season of opera at the Peacock Theatre in London.
BYO's primary purpose is to offer operatic experience to those who have a serious aim of pursuing careers in opera performance, are at the start of their careers, and are new to the profession.
BYO is a training organisation; successful candidates do not pay to participate in the Summer Season (for which a contribution towards subsistence will be given).
British Youth Opera regrets that it is unable to provide feedback on interviews or auditions and reserves the right to alter the proposed repertoire.
